TZANEEN | The Greater Tzaneen Municipality, in collaboration with SAPS and local traffic authorities, has launched a driver safety awareness campaign along the R71 route ahead of the busy Easter weekend.

The initiative aims to promote safer driving habits and reduce road accidents during one of the most high-risk travel periods of the year.

As part of the campaign, motorists were stopped and provided with light snacks to help them remain alert and energised while on the road. Authorities also conducted vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness and checked that drivers had valid driving licences.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Councillor Gerson Molapisane alongside Tzaneen SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Masinamela.

Officials have further cautioned heavy-duty vehicles including buses and trucks to avoid travelling through the Magoebaskloof and Georges Valley routes. This follows safety concerns due to recent damage caused by heavy rainfall in those areas. Motorists are being urged to obey all road signs, avoid fatigue by taking regular breaks and prioritise safety to ensure they arrive alive.

Authorities have also issued a stern warning that any driver found operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol will face immediate arrest as such behaviour puts lives at serious risk.

Our news reporters Rebotile Malatji and Karabo Moloisi attended the event
